Career in communication and mass media

This investigation focused on dealing with mass communications, including advertising and public relations. The results should be useful to individual who may compare their own productivity with others. Previous research on this subject suggests that the individual and schools and departments which "score" highest in productivity are large, state-supported schools with a strong tradition of scholarly research. Indeed there was significant overlap among the leading research schools.

Method

This profession sounds always glamorous, but it does require lots of courage and determination to face the challenges when you are in the profession. First of all you have to make your self understand that in which particular area you are comfortable with, like print, television, radio and portal. Then into particular specialization, like political, sports, cinema, development etc. Then comes the language, in which language you are comfortable with, career in communication and mass media does not mean you have to have preferred English or Hindi language. The sole objective is to communicate people through the medium and there you are going to find real test of your career.

Assess yourself

Merely having a good command over your preferred language, writing for the school or college magazine is good, but try to send your articles to various newspapers and try to give your comments in 'letter to editor' section, then only one can start early. Apart from writing skills, learn some editing and proofreading as well. Knowledge of computer will be an added advantage. And slowly and steadily you can assess your self that in which area you are comfortable with.

Learn new skills

If you have set your mind on journalism, why not learn Web editing and join a big group? This is a new field and a rapidly growing one.


Specialise

Go for a degree or diploma in some discipline first or specialise in an area after joining a newspaper or any other media. And be sure that you are going to pursue with that particular specialization.

Freelance

It is not necessary to join a news organisation. If you are living in a remote area, or cannot take up a regular job, start writing on a freelance basis. Many organisation use free lancers for a wide variety of work. Even students can take this up. This is an added advantage to this particular profession.

Look for other avenues

Do not be limited in news organisations only. You can also do copywriting jobs for advertising agencies, media monitoring and research.


Be honest

Do not join merely for the perquisites that you might get. True, journalists get invited to parties and are given a lot of gifts, but it is good to remember that they are nothing but bribes. In the long run, an honest journalist will be respected more.


Upgrade your writing skills

Always use spare time to read and develop creative writing skills. Many famous writers started as a journalist but became celebrated writers by upgrading themselves.


Broad Casting

Broadcasting deals with every subject under the run. The man who makes a success of its must be, in the best sense of the World, a dilettante. He must take interest in and know something of everything. The programmer staff of a broadcasting station is in the same position as The Editor of a News Paper who can make an exiting column out of a dull item of a news, or first-rate picture "Lioncl Fielden said in 1938, The first controller of Broadcasting in India in talk on "Broadcasting as a Career".

Television News Cast

As a beginner, it easier to find a general news reporting job with local cable operator, who put out a daily city report.

Facility in a regional language will give you advantage at a Regional Language Channel.

Casual Announcer

There is general an audition for the position, as a casual announcer, you get an opportunity to know the working of a radio station, its culture and its programmer

  • Who work in front of microphone
  • DJ, Announcers, News Caster, you should put together an audition tape. Thus should be ideally a 5-15 minute of your work The tape should include your reading of straight News stories The tape allows the potential employer to
    access the quality of voice style and "general air personality".
