CAREER IN SOCIAL DEVELOPEMENTAL SECTOR

There was a time when people get into social work voluntarily, the concerned people who feel for the society and social development. And people never thought of social sector as a career option. In addition to that it is a non-paying sector, above all this is a soul-satisfying profession, but things are different now, today it's broken all barriers.

Now this is a time to dissemination of awareness for both social and economic upliftment and as repeatedly proved India is prone to natural disaster, such as the recent tsunami, Orissa cyclone, the Gujarat earthquake etc, and this all together a new challenge takeover.

The job involves
The task essentially involve identifying community problems such as lack of drinking water, or housing, unemployment, poor or inadequate medical and healthcare facilities, among other things.

Often specialists in the various fields, such as teachers, doctors, public-heath volunteer for a career in developmental work, even with out formal training. Soon after a natural disaster like flood, cyclone, earthquake and tsunami etc. require not only volunteers or social workers to rebuild their lives. But there is very much needs for doctors to provide medical assistance which is first and foremost job, civil engineers to re-build their shelter which, involves innovative ideas and cost-effective technologies, psychologists for to get out of victims out of trauma and last but not the least on which India looking for challenging professionals, disaster management experts for alarming on disaster before the disaster and for management after the math.

Course
More than 35 recognised institutions offer professional degree courses in social work. The bachelor's programme is for a period of three years, after a 10 plus two any subject stream and selection is n the basis of a written test and an interview. The courses are involved mostly field work, where they can prove their skills.

The areas are including such as education, health, natural resources management, gender justice, human rights and disaster management. Graduates in psychology, sociology and related other fields can opt for tow-year master's programme in social work. Organisation like UNDP, UNICEF, CARE, Oxfam, CARE, DFID, PFI, Plan India are always looking for dedicated individuals willing to serve the needs of others.
