CAREER IN VETERINARY SCIENCES

This is a practice as old as the human civilization. Yet it is not very received among the students preparing for various related fields. Veterinary Sciences include the courses to make its students proficient with animal husbandry practices, treatment, prevention and control of animal disease and public health aspects with the ultimate aim of alleviating animal sufferings and improving socio-economic status.

Universities in India
There are five veterinary universities and 35 veterinary colleges under State Agricultural Universities in India. All the colleges offer courses for the award of bachelor of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & AH.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees.

Exam Entrance Process
For graduation programme is through competitive examination, which is conducted by the respective colleges/universities and is mostly restricted to the students belonging to the concerned states. 15% of total seats in each college are filled by Veterinary Council of India through an All India Competition basis.

The bachelor level degree programme (B.V.Sc. & AH.) is of five years duration divided on 10 semesters. In most of the colleges, the educational process is an evolving process and not merely an acquisition of knowledge. There is a multidisciplinary approach at the beginning and last three semesters are devoted mainly to self-learning through problem solving approach, group discussion, seminars, hospital practices etc.

Job opportunity
The veterinary graduates just after completing their degree may get job in various government and private agencies or else they can start their own clinic, pathological/diagnostic laboratory or animal/poultry breeding farm.

Initial preparation
Students interested in a career in veterinary medicine should begin their preparation by doing well in general science and biology in junior high school. To be considered for admission to a college of veterinary medicine, a student must first complete undergraduate pre-veterinary medical coursework.

Behavioral enrichment
In which animal caretakersanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitates and others can provide their animals with mental and physical stimulation using both natural and artificial objects. We do this to tempt the natural inquisitiveness of wildlife in our care. Behavioral enrichment also addresses the space limitations that sanctuaries must. The goal of behavioral enrichment is to increase activity and stimulation levels in the captive environment.

The veterinary profession is not less than any other similar professions. Livestock and poultry farming in India has assumed greater significance as more than 6-7% of national income comes from this sector. The role of veterinarians becomes very much challenging not only in the area of livestock health but also in the area of agro based industries.
