Career in radiography

For providing good treatment, proper diagnosis of the disease is very important. In many cases, it is not possible to identify diseases based only on symptoms. And it is here that the radiographer steps in.

Using the latest technology such as computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), their key role is to produce detailed images that can be used to diagnose injury or disease.

While new radiographers become expert at many different techniques as they gain experience, they may later specialise in a particular area of investigation such as sonography/ultrasonography, bone density scanning or "nuclear medicine", which uses radioactive isotopes to diagnose disease.

Breast cancer screening or obstetrics are among the other possible choices. The job of either sort of radiographer includes being able to communicate with and provide support for frightened patients, as well as to provide doctors with the tools they need to make accurate diagnoses.

Radiographers should have a strong technical and scientific bend of mind, the urge to learn new techniques in the field, the motivation to adapt to changes, and good communication skills.

The top institutions offering BSc in radiography are the Dr MV Shetty Institute Of Health Science (Mangalore), Dr BR Ambedkar Medical College Hospital (Bangalore), University College Of Medical Sciences (Delhi) and GTB Hospital (Delhi).

The Jadavpur University (West Bengal) and Medical College (Kolkata) offer certificate courses in radiography diagnosis.

Career Opportunities

Radiographers are in high demand and career opportunities in radiography are excellent.

Radiographers work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices and industry. Career mobility for radiographers is excellent. With further education or experience, opportunities exist for advancement in education, management and additional imaging modalities.
